We are Ryan and Belle, this year’s Cal Queer and Asian Conference outreach chairs. Our goal is to invite community members from around California and beyond to partake in our fourth annual Cal Queer and Asian Conference. We would like for you to join us in this year’s 2011 conference.
QACON is an annual conference seeking to educate individuals and initiate discussion around the intersectionalities of the queer and Asian communities. This 3-day conference includes workshops, keynote speakers, community performances, and social events aimed at bringing together those interested in queer and Asian issues.
This year’s theme – Forefront – directs attention to the issues that are at the forefront of our community. The recent repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the federal affirmation of the Defense of Marriage Act, and the perpetuation of continued stereotypes about Asian-Americans are issues that have a direct impact on our everyday lives. Forefront is about tackling those issues head-on – educating ourselves about the issues that affect us and energizing us in a way that we can take action. More importantly, however, this year’s theme also tackles a different type of ‘Forefront.” At the heart of this year’s conference is the idea that we need to also place our identitiesat the forefront. This year’s Queer and Asian Conference will bring together a community of people in recognition of the fact that the queer and Asian identity is a unique identity to be proud of. This year we are taking a step forward – looking at the issues at the Forefront – looking at how we can make queer and Asian a part of OUR Forefront.
As such, we would like to extend an invitation to you to join us on April 29th to May 1st, 2011for this exciting gathering here at the Berkeley campus. This conference is free to attend for anyone interested in coming.

Hope you all enjoyed ‘imitation’ mahjong, love fortunes by Thomas Siu, red envelopes, and the competitive coin wars (Our record was 47 coins in 25 seconds! Amazing!!!)!
Fortune cookies, mandarin oranges, and pomelos were provided by Cafe 3 so let us have a moment of silence to thank them!
……………………….. (silence)……………………………………. ok. I think that’s enough.
Anyways, last Saturday’s Time for Recess Social was a total success! We had tons of scrumptious snacks (mmm the Vegan Mocha Cake was finger lickin’ good!) and played a variety of nostalgic childhood games. Thanks to all the folks who came out to Willard Park for fun under the sun!
So, in this week’s Q&A meeting, we will be discussing the various issues surrounding Dating and Relationships in the Queer and Asian community. Dating, love, relationships, sex, and stereotypes about Queer Asians are all topics that we encounter and experience in our everyday lives. Discuss and learn about the various experiences we may share as Queer & Asians and also be exposed to new, eye-opening viewpoints that our members may have! Who knows? This meeting may be the key to finding your ‘true love’!

Your currently *Single* and *Cute* Internal Intern,
Wow, what a great first general meeting!! Big Thank You’s to everyone who came out last Wednesday!
If you enjoyed that, then you are not going to want to miss our second meeting, a Cal Q&A tradition, Storytime. In honor of Storytime, one of our fabulous board members would like to share an excerpt from a story written by a younger, teenage-ish, romantic-ish, and hormonal-ish version of himself.
The sun started to peek through the curtains, creating a stir on the bed. He, still half asleep, turned over and wrapped his arm into my body. His body was warm and familiar as his chest snuggle against my back. Our legs intertwined. This is why I came back to him, I thought to myself smiling. Even though I’m just one tiny speck in the vast city, his touch makes me feel like I am the only important thing in the world, or at least his world. With just a touch, he creates the believable idea that I might just be special.
Oops, wait a second…this isn’t what Cal Q&A Storytime is about! Silly Officer-who-shall-not-be-named. Please erase that last paragraph from your mind and remember that though a certain Cal Q&A officer may be prone to writing that kind of drivel, that is not what Storytime is really about.
Actually, Cal Q&A Storytime a chance for everyone to come share their own autobiographical stories. Whether heartwarming and personal or funny and embarrassing, this is a chance for everyone to have a voice. Come if you have a story to share, but don’t feel pressured if you just want to sit in and listen. We provide a safe and brave space for all individuals to come share and/or listen.
