Well, it’s already the end of another semester, and so this Wednesday, we’ll be hosting our last discussion of the year. (But don’t worry, we still have QACON and Banquet left after this!)

This week’s topic is Language and Power. As this is the last discussion, we will be bringing back the themes from all of this semester’s discussions through a discussion on the relationship between the language people use and power dynamics in society. Finally, we will be closing with a (hopefully not very cheesy) affirmation activity.

QACON Boba Fundraiser

To help raise money for QACON, we will be selling boba tea from Honeyberry on Sproul at our table. Stop by our table on Wednesday or Thursday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. to buy one. All profits will go to QACON!

Queer Town Hall

Our wondrous queer community will have our end of the year townhall at the MCC this Thursday April 2nd from 7pm-9pm. We will be discussing larger community needs, electing upcoming QARC (Queer Alliance Resource Center), our umbrella organization of Cal’s queer orgs; and wrapping up everything that our community has accomplished throughout the year.

Hello fantastic Cal Q&A family!

Thanks for coming to our Cultural Misappropriation Discussion last week. We hope you learned a lot from that meeting and the discussion before it, but this week it’s time for some k-pop fun! Join us for some amazing (and super competitive) games to take the stress off of upcoming midterms.

If you’re not as competitive as *some other* Cal Q&A folks, don’t worry! There will also be a very special, very charismatic, very sexy surprise dance instructor who’ll be at the meeting to teach y’all how to dance to a very, very, very popular k-pop song ;) (Wow, that was a terribly constructed sentence, but it just shows how excited we are about this meeting!)

I know everybody’s just as excited about this as we are, so we expect to see you there~

The weather should be absolutely gorgeous, so it’d be a great day to frolic around outside with all your wonderful sib/Q&A families. And no worries if you don’t have a sib this semester; the social is open to anybody and everybody in Q&A because we’re all one big (cheesy) family!

And one last thing—right after the sib social, Q&A is co-hosting a collaborative Queer Open Mic from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in 130 Wheeler. There’ll be some amazing performances by awesome people from our community, and feel free to perform something of your own if you’d like! Surprise email trivia! Which womyn’s basketball team won the Pac-12?! I’ll give you a hint: NOT UCLA’S! *hiss*

Hope you all had fun last week at our trivia night and were able to bond with each other in your shared hatred for Thomas Hwang and his questions! This week, we will continue asking questions, except our questions will be focused on gender and sexuality in sports! And it’s not really a trivia night but a discussion! By the way, Thomas Hwang is facilitating this week’s meeting too, so study hard and be prepared for some impossible questions! (But don’t worry—like last week, wrong answers won’t affect your GPA!)

Cal Q&A DIY Boba Social!

Hey, bubbly (boba-ly?) Cal Q&A’ers!

This week, we will be hosting the DIY Boba Social! Usually, we get boba after our meeting, so we decided to shake it up a bit and serve boba during the meeting. So, we will be making boba tea and playing boba-related and boba-themed games.

If you would like to partake in the boba festivities, please bring your own mug and spoon (or I guess a boba straw would work, too, if you’d like to snab an extra from Moccacino’s). Also, since boba is actually more expensive to make than I’d have thought, we would appreciate it if you would bring in a small donation ($1 would be more than enough, a little more if you’d like seconds) to help offset costs. But I mean, really, a boba tea is $2 anywhere else, so that’s not that bad, right?

General Retreat - After a Q&A meeting, have you ever thought, “That was too short”? Want an opportunity to hang out with Q&A folks in a space that’s not a classroom? Want to spend a whole weekend in the same house with your fellow Q&Aers? Well, now you can, because we’ll be holding a retreat from Friday, March 1 to Sunday, March 3! This year’s retreat will be held in Santa Cruz. We’ll be sending out an application form soon, so look out for that.

Cal Q&A Storytime!

Hello, beautiful Q&Aers! Vincent and Sam here, your favorite and most adorable interns, writing our first e-mail!

This Wednesday, we’re having our traditional second meeting, Cal Q&A Storytime! An ancient custom in Cal Q&A, Storytime is for you to tell your most personal, juicy, awkward stories you wouldn’t tell anyone anywhere else. Well, okay, they don’t have to be awkward. Your stories can be about anything, such as that awkward date you went on three weeks ago or that time you got your shoelace caught on an escalator.

Storytime happens in a safe space, meaning everything shared among participants will remain confidential.

If you’re new to the space or a returning member who wants to get more involved, sign up for the sib program! The sib program is a great way for new members to make friends and get comfortable in the space. We match up little and big sibs according to hobbies and interests, so be detailed in your app! There’s no age/year limit to apply to be a sib, but we do ask that big sibs applicants be returning members who have been in the space for at least one semester.

If you would like to be included in our amazingly cute and unforgettable sib reveal on Wednesday, February 13, please submit the app by Monday, February 11.

Don’t fret if you accidentally miss the deadline because we accept applications on a rolling basis anytime during the semester.

Do you have a life outside of Q&A general meetings? We do too! Our first weekend social of the year will be dedicated to creating “QART” (Queer & Asian Art)!

While the spring semester has just begun, our room for general meetings isn’t as pretty as it once used to be ;_;.

We’ll hang your lovely decorations to adorn the walls in our future meetings.

In addition, if you’re of the competitive spirit (like Thomas Hwang), then you may be excited to know that we’ll be giving out prizes too!

ALSO. We’ll be screening the film Easy A and we’ll also have snacks. So if you don’t consider yourself much of le artiste, you’ll still have something to enjoy (as well as mingling with other awesome Q&A members!).

Finally, if you would like to attend the Western Regional LGBTQIA conference at UC Santa Cruz from February 15-17, are absolutely certain you can attend, and would like to be a part of the QARC delegation, please fill out this form by February 7 at 11:59 p.m. Cal Q&A only has two spots, and we will randomly fill these spots with two people from this form. Please note, however, that Cal Q&A will not be covering the cost of registration, which is between $30-40.

Hello Beautiful Community!

If you’re looking for a rad space of bad-assed queer + Asian friends and allies, then you’ve reached the right space! Yes, we mean you!

Things that you might do at Cal Q&A’s first general meeting:
- Sing “Oops, I Did It Again!”
- Crack open a durian!
- Meet folks from Stanfurd’s Q&A (We are establishing a truce for now.)
- Hang out with some wonderful people

Okay, so you will probably not have to sing. But the only way you can find out which exciting activities we’ll do is if you come! Remember, you need not be queer or Asian to attend!

Welcome Back Q&A’ers! We’re rolling out of bed and out the door to greet the new semester with great ENTHUSIASM. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, Jan 30th 7:30-9pm in 130 Wheeler.

Also, Queer Au Lait is this Thursday. Jan. 24th, 7-9pm @ MCC and QARC (Hearst Annex D and Hearst Annex A15) Come socialize, connect with old friends, meet new people, learn about the different LGBTQ organizations on campus, and enjoy coffee/tea and snacks!

Cal Q&A is also tabling on Upper Sproul for the next two weeks! Look for us and hang-out at our table. (sometimes we get lonely~) Pick up some awesome Cal Q&A stickers while you’re here too. Woot for the new semester!

Oh Hi Q&A-ers!

Now that our semester is coming to a close, don’t y’all want to spend a charming evening indulging in delightful food with everyone in Cal Q&A before we leave each other warm arms for Winter Break?

Oh, silly us ~ OF COURSE Y’ALL DO! (´∀｀)♡

We invite y’all to our Cal Q&A Winter Banquet! (Our banquet will be vegetarian and vegan friendly, too.) And along with eating HELLA food, we will be playing White Elephant! If you’re interested, please bring a wrapped gift to the banquet ~ We urge folks to spend maximum $5.

Cal Q&A Sexual Health Discussion! Last meeting of the semester!

Hey Q&Aers!

This week, we’ll be having our sexual health discussion, featuring guest facilitator Nevin Rao! Come discuss consent, sexual assault, and other important (but often overlooked) issues. This is the LAST regular meeting of the semester, so we’d love to see all of you there!

This Saturday (December 1) is World AIDS Day 2012! To celebrate, the Asian & Pacific Islander (A&PI) Wellness Center is hosting Project Headshot Clinic “UNITE”, which will feature a gallery of many local leaders and HIV activists. The event takes place this Saturday at 7:00pm at Mom’s Pharmacy Castro. Get more info on the Facebook event.

Asian Pacific Islander Recruitment and Retention Center (REACH!) is inviting Cal Q&A members to their annual Central California 2013 Outreach Trip, a six-day trip from January 12 to 18 to promote higher education to underserved API youth. Get more info and apply here now!
